Land Rover Discovery

I'm thinking about getting a diesel Discovery for towing. Something around 2002/2003 facelift model. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about them and what to look out for?

Paul

Go for a Shogun,

I am surrounded by both and use to be landy mad 'LETS GO OFF ROAD!!'

I had four at one point!!

I am forever fixing, welding and generally getting pis$%d off with friends and family’s blasted landrovers.

A Disco is about 15 years behind the Shogun in about every aspect and their engines are just the pits.

I drive the Shoguns all the time now and apart from the rather high fuel consumption love them to bits. Only prob is they are too good to take off road. Towing power is phenomenal pulled 3 1/2 tons last time at 60mph no problem. Go for an auto, their stronger and last for ever. Manual landy boxes are things to avoid and only last 100k.

Hope this helps, Sorry landy freaks!! But it’s all true…and you know it

Cheers for that guys. I think you have confirmed what I already knew about buying Jap. I haven't taken much notice of the Shogun cos I thought they were over priced. I used to own a Ford Explorer. Its towing capability was awesome and so was it's list of extras but I didn't like the 15mpg. I am half tempted to get another and LPG it but I'm not convinced because the cost and availability of spares is crippling.

hmm LPG is good but needs a fuel computer controlled fuel injection system to work, well thats what I was told by the LPG fitter guy when I tried (in vain) to get it for my Falcon.

Get one running on chip fat.........

I actually liked the Disco we had, it just didnt like us, disco ownership is a two way relationship, you get too drive but you intimate with the tools too.

Hi,we've had three discos a300 and two TD5's,dont bother the newer they are the worse they are.

I specialised in repairing all Landies for a living and worked on most jap stuff as well.I have lost count of the number of gearboxes and clutches and suspension bushes I have changed, you will always be having something repaired, its built in.
I also used to race in comp safaris(navigating for a mate)in a couple of V8 specials.

If you cant afford a landcruiser buy a shogun.

I am trying to talk my dad out of replacing his second TD5 for another and buy something like a Volvo or Saab that doesn't have electrical faults all the time.

Why is my dad changing his Disco? well he loves it to bits but the anti skid crap keeps trying to put the brakes on one rear corner every now and again when it feels like it,Land rover dealers cannot find anything wrong, what a surprise.Trouble is the 3 year warranty soon runs out!!!!

One of my mates also use to run a landy garage. He gave it up after years of endless hassle trying to fix them. Just got fed up...

My Series I was as tough as old boots (and heavy) after that they got lighter and flimsier. Now I can't believe how thin the chassis are. Gearboxes went the same way, don't seem much stronger now than a cars.

If you want a disco get a series 1 it is more or less the same as the same era range rover. The doors rust as do inner wings and boot floor the chassis usually stays good. 300 tdi or 200 tdi are simple and strong engines with lots out there and cheap bits. If you must have a V8 get a set of carbs off an older rangie and gas that set up, loads cheaper and easier than tring to gas an injection system.

landies have a bad rep for reliability, however there are an awful lot more around than same age jap crap. if you want something for a year or two and don't mind throwing all the money away the jap is ok if you want to keep for the long term then get a Land Rover product and just remember the older it is the more work it takes to keep it in good nick!

They dont have to be old to have to work on them!Trust me I have worked on almost every type of Landy made apart from the very latest stuff.

I have also owned and run series 2/3's,Range Rover V8's, a Rangie with 4236 Perkins,a 90 Turbo and a V8 110,and a lovely disco 300 we owned from new, and my dad has run 3 discos including the TD5 he now runs.
If you look at the prices of Shoguns they hold their price better than a Disco I think.

I also imported a few Pajero's from Ireland when the grey import loophole made it worthwhile, they are still holding reasonable values 8 years later.

Dont get me wrong,I love Landy products but if you dont need an off road tool buy something less time consuming.
If you do need an off road tool then a Disco would have to be kitted up with proper off road tyres to be any use, as on standard road tyres almost anything will get stuck on a basic slippy grass slope.

IMHO the series 2 was probably the best/toughest vehicle built and the best off road would be a TDI or V8 90.
Neither of these give much in the way of creature comfort, and the series 2/3's cant even keep up in modern traffic!
My first landy was a series 2 that I converted to a 3.5 V8,the doors would have a 2 inch gap at the top when you reached 90mph,and the steering got a little bit exciting especially when leving Xr3's at the lights!!

Hi Paul,

I wanted a Disco for years, and after much research, bought a 1992 Landcruiser. She's an import, has a 4.2 td, and I've converted her to run on veg oil. I'm about an hour from Bristol, and would willingly meet you half way so that you can have a look and drive if you want. The LC is built like a tank, and is a superb car. It tows like a dream. I'll U2U my mobile to you.

Regards, Ian.
