my engine is a 1.6 zetec made in november 1992.

Think its only Post Aug 1995 that needs a cat so yours shouldnt.

i have a '93 1.8 zetec and don't need a cat so you will be ok

The limit is 3.5%CO for engines produced between 1986 and 1st August 1995.
