english axle

can anyone identify this axle .I know it is the english axle as the diff housing bolts to the front,but I thought the rear cover was fairly flat this one protrudes out a fair bit and has welds all around it(look closely)

to my kowledge the ones i have come across like thi s were done to in an attept to increase the capacity of the oil reserve the diff sits in on rally cars and the like

Now that you have pointed that out, I recall seeing Hot Rod Escorts and Anglias modified thus. The reasoning being to ensure enough oil during the turns when otherwise it would be down one axle tube due to centrifugal force.
