Auto VW G/box woes

Further from a previous thread http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=68035 i took the car to VW to be checked. The problem has not happened at all this week and the garage found no fault with the gearbox, HOWEVER!!!

2 days ago i took my car to a mate who put his diag equipment on the car and it came up with 2 solenoid intermittent faults but he cleared the faults and took it for a test.

SO

thats why VW can't find a fault. SO they said that the solenoids were part of the valve unit which is £600 + vat to replace and while youre there you may aswell change the clutch so it comes to 2/3's the price of a replacement gearbox which is £3200 + vat.

I'll be using the car on long journies soon one of which is to Bordeaux with the in-laws so i need my 7 seats.

Thinking of PXing the car for something else before the G/box goes bang. The garage will give me £4k for the car and £5k with new G/box!!

What would you do (on limited funds)

Sounds silly but if you can get near them, check if there are any connections etc you can clean on the bits. Ive seen intermittent faults with stranger reasons but might be worth a crack. If you take it back to your mate as well, if its a snap on diagnostic tool he should be able to show you if the fault is about to surface again. The fault only comes up if it happens on three consecutive drive cycles, but the fault will just be logged if say it only happens once or twice. then not for a while so you should be able to see if its happening but not often, or not happening at all anymore.

Sounds like you aren't alone in your "valve" problem.
