someone said it kept getting put back. I myself would get an older copy and work from there, maybe modifying the plans slightly. Its not too hard once you're started. Theres plenty of help on here anyway if you get stuck!

If I were at that point I'd go for a modified/new rear end for IRS; but that's just my opinion!

The Capri or Cortina route is so quick and simple, Although my car is not on the road yet, I think the difference in handling is so small that is is definately worth considering

I have given this a fair bit of thought and to be honest the jury is still out. However I think I am leaning towards a IRS set up. My main reason for this is that Sierra donors are two a penny and I think it is fair to assume that Sierra parts will be available at a realistic price for much longer. I also think that Sierras will become the standard donor as the other cars become like rocking horse poo. This will lead to a much larger selection of off the shelf Sierra based Locost parts.

are there any companys or individuals offering plans for an irs chassis. no matter how much i weigh up the pros and cons of either route, im still drawn to the sierra.

You are undoubtedly right about sierra parts. It would be possible to use a sierra donor and purchase a live axle separately, if you wanted, then you would save effort and still have the simplicity of sierra parts. Having said that, escort and other parts will be around for ages, even if the cars aren't.

Irs would be harder than a live one i guess, but it depends on your priorities, if you want it quick and easy or slower and IRS! choice is your mate!

You could make plans for IRS yourself, you would have to work out what you wnated it to look like (ie what wishbone setup etc), i just used the entire rear subframe off the sierra, but that is a bit heavy i suspect - certainly couldn't lift it easily.

I can bet now that after you have looked at all thats needed to make up rear uprights, mountings, pivot points, posed for hours over the geometry, etc, you will remember that a cortina axle would have been sooooo much easier.

From one who learnt the hard way.

As for 'long term spares availability' I have been on sites like this for 3+ years. It seems that its quite rare for people to keep their cars more than 2 - 4 years. Also, in the unlikely event that your cortina axle fails, there WILL be companies that can repair it and there WILL be other axles around.

In 10 years time sierras will be VERY rare.

Just for those who aren't aware of it, if you want to use sierra parts but find designing IRS rather daunting, have a look at de dion.

As Blueshift says, look at the de-dion option. You can use a Sierra diff and running gear but with all the simplicity of a live axle 5 link suspension system. Take a look at my website and the numerous discussions on this subject of late for details. Feel free to email me if you want to discuss any specific aspects.

Also, be aware the GTS Racing are planning a de-dion kit. Contact user "dozracing" on this forum for details or visit the GTS Racing website on http://www.gtscougar.freeserve.co.uk

I hope this helps,
Craig.

to irs or not to irs.

Have you considered the dedion route? You will have to mount the rear gear box, but the rest is largely the same four link arrangement with either a watts linkage or panard rod.I'm thinking of going this route myself (mostly because i'm the laziest sloth to grace the planet)because it is the best of both worlds (according to caterham)and much easier than an irs set up?

There's no need to rear-mount the gearbox. That was a preference of the Alfa/Volvo 340 layout to equalise weight distribution in a nose heavy car. Caterham use a normal front-engined, Ford gearbox and separate de-dion rear.

Cheers,

Neil.

If you still want to go down the IRS route:

some people have 'grafted' the irs setup from the tiger Avon onto a book chassis.
I don't personally know how well this works or what success they had but it is possible and the plans are in the much loathed Tiger Avon book.

One cheating way to use sierra irs is to use the entire rear subframe, then all the mountings are in the right place (for the diff and the bones/trailing arms). Bit heavy though, and if i had bigger balls id have done a deDion.

The Tiger Cat e1 uses the full rear end set up straight of a sierra - looks very heavy and damn awkward to me....

IRS

Food for thought..
If you decide not to go the IRS route be consoled with the fact that most RACE preped chassis are either De Deon or Live!

Depends what you want it for?
Comfort - IRS
or
Power down - Live axle or better still De Deon.

The pleasure has been all mine.
