That is a cracking clip and avatar!

How high did it go?

I upgraded my latches to latching ones that have a click and lock action.

Pat ;-)

Oops!!!!

On the couple of occasions I've managed to drive mine I make a point of using gaffa tape on my bonnet as the SVA complient catches are c**p

Glad to see it was just bonnet, underwear and pride damaged

I think some good quality bonnet pins should be on the shopping list. I've not seen a latch I thought could trusted against the lift generated.

Hmm still using those rubber catches on mine! The bonnet has lifted before but that was my mistake for not latching them properly.

Vents will help and they look better with something IMHO.

I had the same problem but fortunately it landed in a nicely grassed ditch after going about 20ft into the air! Just 2 small scratches on the scoop.

I normally gaffer tape the catches down "just in case" but plain forgot this time - won't make that mistake again!

There are chips out of the front and rear going an inch or so inwards I think. Hoping I can get some U-trim deep enough to hide them

Thankfully it was a pretty quiet track day so there was no-one directly behind me.

Aha- the two universal rules of DIY.

If its supposed to be attached and isn't- gaffer tape.
If it is attached and isn't supposed to be- wd40.
The end.

Scary!!!

I was the man behind him! Luckily I was still on the hairpin when the bonnet came off, so by the time I got there it had landed on the far right hand side of the track, just near the gravel trap.

Glad it's not too badly damaged Simon. Great quality video by the way.

Cheers

Mike

The rubber SVA complaint latches are perfectly good - the clue is to fitting them correctly. We have had the same latches on two builds and NEVER had a problem. There is a template on our website that works... there should be one that is supplied with the latches to ensure good fitting, but there rarely is.

Simon - glad you are ok! Did you have a personal relationship with the bonnet, you even had time to wave to it

Looks like a good day - that was Middlesborough track yes???

My excuse is I didn't build the car and therefore didn't fit the catches! I've never been totally happy with how tight they pull but since there's already holes there it can't now really be moved a few mm, unless I totally redo them to the side of the existing ones and put stickers over all the holes Thus the (usual use) of gaffer tape.

Yes it was Middlesbrough - full video in a day or two.

The camera is one of these: http://www.rfconcepts.co.uk/pack_3.htm plugged into DV camcorder.

Did the same thing a couple of years back on the Melbourne loop at Donington. My rubber catches were replaced with steel ones and r clips the following day.

smashing clip. ah i mean damn bad look chap.

ive noticed ive used the same clips and wondered what was the ideal 'stretch' they needed when i fitted them. Didnt think to look for a template.

i have learnt not to leave the bonnet standing up on its end even in my garage, the wind or street cats seems to knock it over.

Good to hear it hadnt splintered into many bits.

Glad to hear the bonnets not too damaged.

I'll be fitting Dax style side panels to help remove the air pressure on the next car, as even with Caterham type bonnet you still get a little lifting.

I'm also liking the film qualilty.

ATB Dan.
