Sorry this is a bit off topic but i knw there are some IT wizzes out there and i was wondering if i might be able to pick your brains
I was hoping to get my dad a domain name and a bit of web space for christmas so he can make is own website. I know there are companies out there that
will do the whole hosting and registering thing for you but i don't know who is best to use.

Depending on how much techie work he wants to do, 1&1 do domain name sales and hosting, etc. at a reasonable price. I set up a web site for my
wife's business using their web builder package - it has different templates and you can select colours, etc., add text and pictures, etc.

I sit opposite our Domain name team.
They register our companies names (several thousand of them, as we are a large global operation), and also deal with our customers names.
They always use www.easily.co.uk for their personal registrations.
Reasonably cheap, all do-able on line.
However, the REAL gem, is that you can speak to them (Easily) on the phone. With many other companies you cant do this.
Also they dont own your name, so it really does belong to you.
Some registry companies own the name so they have full control over it. Then you hold you to ransome (exorbitant charges) to move it to another
registrar.
I have used them for about 5 years now and they have been brilliant.
Give them a go.

LCN or Compila are cheap otions I have domain names with both.
Compila have a particularly good online control panel.

I use uk2.net. cheap and so far never needed support though I do know pretty much how it all works and can call a friend if I get stuck. They do web
hosting or diverts to whoever you have space with, sometimes you r ADSL provider packages space with your account. What is very handy is auto renewal
so you never risk losing your domain if you forget to renew.

I cant fault 123reg. - they've had to cope with some bloody silly questions from me in the past.
I have bought .com names in the past from godaddy - but they do tend to bombard you with more offers than DFS have sales.
