wheel size

any advise on wheel size ,195 is fixed in stone but a bit undecided on 15 ,16 ,17
comfort or style.
just thought this is like sat night do i go 15 in cheapest easy to get just looks a tad ugly ,or the 17 expensive but looks so nice ,but can give you a bumpy ride or plane Jane 16 in can you point this c... in the right direction. This has prob post few times before but new to the site.........ta

Are 13 in bit small ,there to fit an mk about to mount all the wings soon ,need to order wheels to set up the wings ,

i've got 17's for the looks and they don't handle that badly but got 15's for the more serious stuff when i get the chance to do some..........

185/60/13, 205/55/13 and 195/50/15 are all the same diameter so one won't fill a wheel arch any more than any other.

13" wheels are lighter, giving more control over the tyre, giving more consistent grip on uneven surfaces. The flex in the side wall of the tyre gives better ride and less lairy handling on the limit.

I have 15s and its fine.

Just to throw an extra one in the mix, I have 14" wheels with 185/60/14 tyres.

I've got them because they were available secondhand at a reasonable price

However, like the 13" options described above, they give a decent amount of sidewall to help with ride and grip, and IMHO this type of car looks better with more tyre visible - the 16-17" wheels can look like they've got rubber bands on!

I'm with Humbug.

I've got 14" wheels with 185/60 tyres. They give a good ride with excellent handling and they were VERY cheap. They are the same wheels as you can see on his avatar actually, old Westfield design I think.

I have 10 wheels with tyres and the whole collection only cost 160.

Thanks for the advise ,seems that we are narrowing down wheel size now ,gone are the 17 and 16 i was looking at .

looking at a set of 15in team dynamics ,they have toyo tyres fitted are they ok .

If you have the Sierra disc's on the rear, you won't get less than 15" on anyway unless you go split-rim.

Toyo Proxes T1S are supposed to be ok for normal dry/wet road use - so I've heard.

13's here and it does seem to improve ride quality and handling compared to the 15's on my last car

I/We were advised fitting 13's on the rear with Sierra discs and calipers wasn't possible. Our's were too close for comfort with 14" on and exchanged Ford Fitment wheels.

So - what you done Mr Cook - had the disc's reduced in diameter and moved in the caliper? Plus used Caterham look-a-like wheels, or are they original Caterham Wheels?

13" 14 or 15"

If car engined use 185 s on the front 195s on the rear or 175 and 185

If Bike engine (or even with Rover K) think about 175s on the front 195s on the rear.

For best handling rim width should be at the top end of the suitable fitment range for the tyre used.

They are in fact Caterham wheels (which are quite reasobaly priced) with spacers to fill out the arches - but the discs and mounts are unadulterated. The handbrake lever did require minor fettling. The closest clearance on my rear wheels is at the lower wishbone-upright bolt. I'm not familiar the Indy setup though.

Caterham wheels are ET24 - certainly in the style I have anyway. On the front they work perfectly with my bodywork and on the rear they need the spacer to fill out the arch although they could have been a bit thinner. With the actual wheel design I don't think the spacer makes any difference because the ID of the rim is constant in the area which would clash with the caliper - so it could go on without the spacer if i remember correctly.

13 inch cxrs do go over the standard sierra disc set up with a minor tweak of the h/b actuating lever

Me too, same wheels but using Hi-Spec handbrake calipers, not Locost but very nice.

You can always use old escort front discs on the back for higher brake caliper offset, this should work fine on 13" wheels, but the hub does need machining down.

Its been done many times- just have a search.

Geez, what's happened here??

I got poo-pooed and flamed into oblivion a year or so ago, when I recommended 13" wheels, because of weight saving and handling advantages, and the benefits and safety of higher profile tyres.

Maybe the works better vs. looks better ratio of builders has gone up, or big wheels+rubber band look has just gone out of fashion

I have 185/70 x 13" tyres on my car.

I really don't give a stuff about the appearance, although I like the 'period look' anyway. All I know is that I get decent ride quality, and the car is very predictable when cornering fast - I can hang the tail out, or not, according to my mood at the time. No sudden break-aways, plenty of grip.

It's worth remembering that these tyres were considered quite wide when first fitted to Cortinas and Capris, and they weighed about 75% more!

The only down-side for this size of tyre is availability - I may have to change to 60's next time, to get a decent choice.
