120 BHP from 1600 X-Flow

Hi guys and gals!

We have a debate going on our South African Locost forum regarding the most cost-effective way to get a reliable and drivable 100kW (+/- 120bhp) from a 1600 Kent Crossflow motor. Assuming you start with a stock standard Escort Mk II 1600, what are you ideas to make it happen?

Many thanks!

Cam
Big valves
Porting
Webers.

My old car went eventually to JoelP and he had it rolling roaded. It was breathing a bit heavily by that point, but I seem to remember 127bhp. That was about the spec of that engine.

I have 127BHP AND 115FT/LBS torque from my xflow. Block was bored 30 thou with 1300 pistons, Kent BCF2 cam kit £45 ? from e bay, Vulcan 11a large valve unleaded head £230 from e bay, steel flywheel £40 . Home made inlet manifold with Kawasaki 1100 throttle bodies, £100 Emerald ecu chrismas present. Engine is balanced and ecu set up by Dave Walker at Emerald Engine pulls like a train with no problems in traffic , in fact the only problem I have is if I hit a bump at slow speeds in low gear my foot "bounces" on the accelerator pedal and causes jerky driving because the engine is so responsive. Must fit another return spring.

I can vouch for this. Whilst I can out accelerate and top speed Rusty's car (with my V8 Viento)
I have to push it hard to catch him when he has his foot down.

Basically, Rusty's setup works really well.

So the statement on our forum ...

To be honest it is fairly straight foward and fairly cheap to get +-100 kw out of these motors reliably and that comes with plenty low down torque

... is a little far fetched? Sounds like at least some machining is required in addition to bolt ons?

I've read the Burton article as well as a few other on Kent tuning (Puma Race Engines, CCC, etc) but they seem contradictory in some respects ... hence my post to get some objective views.

Easier to get 150 bhp from a zetec but I had the crossflow in the car already and decided to stick with it.

I used to get 110bhp from my old 1300cc X-Flow engine in a Mk1 Escort. My mate's 2100cc Pinto was slower!!

Well, this is pobably the definitive answer from one of the guys on the locostsa.co.za forum ...

100kw at the flywheel(130 BHP) is the same spec Caterham used in the supersprint for years and has been proven to be relaible enough,
This spec is not an over cammed race engine either and is perfectly drivable.
The supersprint spec involved boring the block out 90 thou giving a 1691 cc capacity, the head is flowed and large inlet valves are fitted(41.3mm), the bottom end is lightened and balanced. 1300 cc cast pistons are fitted and the block is decked correctly.
The cam fitted is not a "monster", it does provide more lift and longer duration (around 280 deg). This spec fitted with a decent exhaust system and sorted webers should see close to 130bhp.
The overbore does not add to the power however it does introduce more mid range torque.

Well, those mods sounds a little more than "fairly straight forward and fairly cheap". Reckon I'll play around with the crossflow in its current mild state of tune for a few more months or years and when I want more performance build / buy a 4AGE or ROCAM engined car ...
