Sierra steering rack
Does anyone know if it's possible to use a sierra non power steering rack instead of a mk2 escort one with extenders. I am planning to use the
donors 4x4 uprights with modifications to accept the book (roadster) wishbones,I was going to build it in 4 wheel drive but it looks like a whole lot
of extra hassle.

Isn't it too big ?? This from the roadster discussion group
It's to do with the length of the actual rack portion of the "steering rack"
To optimise steering performance including bump steer the machined rack and the track rods have to be a certain length. In short the machined rack of
the Sierra is too long. Now there are two ways of solving this - shorten the Sierra rack or use a shorter rack.
Some kit cars similar to the Roadster use a modified Sierra rack on an exchange basis and supply similar extensions to the Roadster ones. They
shorten, machine and reassemble the racks, unfortunately this isn't really a DIY proposition, So we used the shorter Mk2 Escort rack. This was
chosen because they are still plentiful in the motor factors and available in a vast range of ratios because the rally boys are still using the MK2
Escort in large numbers.
