Diff Checking?
I was told when I bought my LOCOST it has an LSD.
I have been re-building it for a number of months and, am about to change the oil.
According to my local motor factors, the oil type for LSD differs from the standard.
As the car is not running at the mo, I can't drive and check and I am about to change the oil and the seal what identification should be on the
diff?
thanks

Think those codes are refering to sierra diffs? Im guessing yours will be an escort live axle with it being a locost?? In which case its most likely
an aftermarket lsd if it has one, not sure which, if any, english axles had an lsd as standard. It could even be an atlas which could well have an
lsd. Post a pic of the internals when you take the back off, it should be easy to tell by looking, or maybe just a few more details. If you can jack
both wheels off the ground, try turning one and if the other turns the opposite way, its open. If its stiff and turns the same way, its a lsd.
(think thats the right way round anyway) someone should be along to confirm soon

The LSD is just a sealed unit that bolts on the back of the crownwheel effectively, just normal hypoid oil is required, nothing special so EP80 went
in mine because thats what I had lying around

I think thats correct for a viscous diff like the xr4x4, but if its an english axle, its probably a plated diff which i think maybe does need the
right oil. Could even be a quaife atb, we really need to know more info.

hi,
It is an English axle - the description 'of what diff' was pretty vague when I bought it hence the lack of detail - as i am taking it
out, I have got an escort manual so hopefully that will help with the ident.
Having read a number of threads, i read that the 'turning the' wheel check didn't work on early, LSD's?

A plated Salsbury type diff needs the corrects LSD oil, otherwise it won't work (and you'll contaminate and ruin the clutch pack
plates).
I've bought it from Rimmer brothers in the past, but they might even have it in Halfords.

Absolutely - hence the question - will I know whether its an LSD when I take it out? (I have 2 x 1 litre bottles of oil one LSD one not on my
desk...

it's an lsd but not one that i've seen before.
If it looks wrong it probably is wrong.
