BALLS!!!! Snapped wheel stud

Just replaced the front brakes on my tintop...

All was going swimmingly well until I tried to torque the wheel bolts up...

For some reason one of them snapped.....And another will proberably snap if I push it up to the correct torque... (Both on the same wheel)....

Im guessing that at some point someone has seriously overtightened and stretched the studs causing them to snap....

I just hope to high heaven that it has not damaged the threads inside the hub!


Now I have a slight problem....I HAVE to be at work tomorow....

If I move one of the good studs from the back wheel to the front so I have three studs at the rear, and four at the front......

Will the car be safe to drive the 20 miles to work and back?


Im guessing the local car parts place wont have studs so its going to be a main stealer thing

guessing its front wheel drive?
if so then you'd be ok as long as you are sensible.................

Yes its front wheel drive...

Will drive like an old man all the way... Loosing a wheel would hurt!

There is an almost identical car to mine in the scrappy next to where I work....Was tempted to go get the wheel bolts off that, but Im guessing new ones would be the wisest choice....

Or if you haven't already and there alloy wheels a set of locking nuts wouldn't go amiss.

There about £32 for McGuard ones at Halfords and they keep quite alot in stock.

i would just use a normal bolt and washer...

as long as the wheel is attached to the hub by good amount of force it wont come off!!

the balance isn't that problem because the weigh being close to the axle...

if you have a hole then i would just put something in it...M10 with big washers up to torque should hold a wheel on...!!

in worst case it gives you more time to come to a stop...

How embarising...my old man has offered to drive me to work I feel safer this way...I dont know what condition the other bolts are in...

I wonder if halfords will have a set suitable for the car...

Urgh....yet more money lol

if its done that to the bolts then the threads may be none too clever either
so be careful..................................

TBH I am slightly worried about the threads in the hubs, but there is not a lot I can easily do about them.... Short of finding new hubs

i sheered one of my wheel bolts off my mk2 golf just trying to undo it, finally got it out and wanged another bolt in there, no problems for 3 years and then sold the car so i wouldnt worry its more of a pain in the ass than anything and rember loads of copper grease

I drove thrashed the poo out of my Sierra donor handbrake turning and wheel spinning. When I took the wheel trims off there were only 2 nuts on each wheel. I wouldn't worry about having only 2 opposite. Don't try 3 they will be out of balance. FYI some models of car only have 3 in a triangle so it's plenty strong enough.

two nuts, opposite sides, would be enough to hold a wheel on but obvioulsy the more the better.
