More diff stuff. Crownwheel and pinion change.

Newb here. Just picked up an MK with a Hayabusa engine and obviosly love it.

Problem is it has 3.92 LSD ratio in the diff which is brutally quick and great for abit of fun, but for longer driving and trackdays it becoms a problem. My question is this:

I have calculated that a 3.38 ratio would be ideal. Can i just buy a C/w n pinion set (manufactured by burton power) and drop it in to my casing.

Will it be ok with the LSD, and how easy is this to do??

Many thanks.

If you find a 3.38 sierra open diff, you can take the LSD and differential gears out of your current diff and fit them to the crown wheel and pinion in the 3.38 diff. You are then left with the parts to make an open diff out of your old 3.92.

You can buy new crown wheels and pinions, expensively, but only in 3.62 and 3.92 ratios.

If I were you, I'd sell the 3.92 LSD and fit a 3.38 open diff from a 2.3D Estate Sierra.

Welcome to the madhouse BTW.

thanks for the info guys. Been struggling to find a 3.38 open diff and apparently burton power can supply the c/w + pinion set for £250 with 3.38 ratio. I'm thinking this is the only option left. Is it straight forward changing these??

In a word, No. The difficulty is setting the backlash which basically involves shimming the pinion to get it in the right place. You could do it yourself however, or find a specialist (gearbox reconditioners could probably sort it)

Hi

I think you may be he friend of alex???

Yes you would be best to go 338 should give you a top speed around 127 mph as you 392 would give you 110 ish,

Depending if mainly track use then possibly go lsd and convert a 338 open into the 392 casing,

if mainly road use i think a open diff will be more than fine,

I do know someone who can do this for you and u2u or call me if alex friend he has ny number might also be able to find a diff for you? but they sell quick so let me know,

Back lash is the issue setting it up, this correct as already said,

U2u me or call if you need assistance

Thanks
Sean
