R1, breather thingy that doesnt connect to AirBox?
Major Stare - 23/7/09 at 09:20 PM

Just fitted the 2003 R1 airbox but reversed round.

I have what looks like a breather, that i cannot seem to work out where it would have fitted if the airbox was fitted correctly?

Its a hard plastic pipe with a round plastic cup fitted, with some gauze inside.

What should i do with this?

Currently trying to find a photo to show.

This it?

I believe you can just leave this as it is. I have had no problems yet, although I have probably had about 24 hours or less total engine running time.

ETA: This is a carbed 2000 engine, though I don't think there is a lot of difference as yours I think is an early injection R1. Although I am happy to be corrected.

Yep, it looks like that, however.... mines between inlet 1 & 2.
It also looks like i should have one where yours is??

There are two plastic breather pipes between my carb inlets - between 1 and 2, and 2 and 4. I think on a bike they vent straight into the airbox.

I let these vent straight into the engine compartment, never seems as though anything comes out, as I am using foam filters at the moment.

Found this in my archive:

Is this what you are referring to? Mine doesn't have the cup thingy though.

The engine I am using came straight out of an MNR, so I am assuming the engine is ok as it is. There is nowhere on my airbox (which doesn't fit backwards due to uneven inlet spacing) that this pipe would vent into.

Aha! I knew there was a reason I highlighted all those bits Link

Cheers guys, i'll leave them alone.

Just need to sort a small air filter for the breather pipe.

Do you have any pics of the airbox fitted the wrong way round, I was looking at doing this with mine but couldn't get it to 'look' as though it would fit

Pics as requested.

I cut the air inlet section and then drilled 3x 25mm holes, as the inlet was very close to the chassis rail.

Turn the box round as seen in the pictures.

You will need to block some holes in the airbox where oil breather pipe etc was connected.
You will also have to extend the Air Temp Sensor cables or relocate it.

It didnt quite fit under my Westfield narrow bonnet, so the bonnet was cut. I have now fitted a carbon mods bonnet scoop.

Had my first drive today with it fitted instead or the foam filter. Car seems a lot smoother and quieter. Also seems to have added torque as it pulls a lot stronger.
