A friend of mine just bought the book and this got me thinking about building my own locost. I have a old ford escort xr3i that I would like to use
and now I need to know to witch sierra I can bold this engine. Also did any one ever use a Alfa 75 (I really like those 2l twinspark enignes 150hp) or
perhaps a Porsche 924 (rear mounted gearbox) as a donor car?

Hello and welcome.
Firstly you may wish to resize that avatar
Secondly i'd imagine the xr3i engine (a CVH?) will bolt right up to a Type 9 gearbox no problems although you may need different clutch parts...
Someone who's building a car with that engine will probably be able to answer your question better.
Fixed the avatar size. Sorry about that.
So I need a type 9 gearbox. The next question would be how to indentify a type 9 tranny. Witch types of sierra's use this tranny?
earlier sierra's use the type 9, later sierra's use the mt75. the xr4i has a slightly different versio of the type 9 which can be used, but
it has a longer input shaft. also beware of the 4x4 type90 and 4x4 mt75 boxes..
something like a sohc sierra should have a type 9..
Ned.
By earlier sierra's you mean the first "genaration ' that was made from 82 till 87? How about diesel versions? I already have the escort xr3i engine.
I have a type 9 that came from an 1800 cvh Sierra on an F plate. I'm intending to bolt it to a 1600 cvh (the same as yours but no fuel injection)
and was told that I needed the 1800 cvh flywheel and clutch as well as the 1800 starter motor.

The MT75 came in with the twincam, october 1990 I think, it was added to the CVH 1.6 Cat version about a year later, 90% of all sierras had the same type 9 fitted
If I understand correctly, if I buy a sierra with a cvh engine I should be able to mount it to the xr3i engine. If not; would I be able to use the sierra eninge block with the better flowing head of the xr3i? create some sort of a hybride engine.
Not sure about changing the head. Try Puma Racing for more details. Should be ok with the sierra gearbox on a 1600 CHV though, that's what i'm doing.
Mounting a FWD CVH may be a problem as there is nowhere to attach the engine mounts, I know jolsen did a lot of research on the 1600 CVH sierra engine (L6B), it has 78BHP, it may be the unit to mount a XR3i head on?
With a little ingenuity you could attach the second mount with the alternator. It's also been suggested that with minimal drilling and tapping you could create a mounting point. All covered in this thread.
