Wide English axle's
I have spotted re-sleeved widened English axle casings from 48 1/2" to 52" wide, what is the a standard width? I have not seen any longer
drive shafts to fit so can they be found of the shelf or are they made to measure?
I ask because, I am looking at upgrading to an LSD and while I was ther was thinking of sorting a couple of other things. As the width at the rear
does not fill the arched I was considering going a bit wider.

Because of the way the english axle is fabricated from thin sheet steel I would be very dubious about a widened english axle.
Another way of getting an LSD would be a de Dion coversion, the chassis mods required are minimal.

Interestingly that was what I was thinking of doing to start off with.

Looks like that approach is back on the cards.

English axles were available in a variety of lengths, starting at 45 Inch for the 105e anglia, 46.5 Inch for the 107e and 307e, 48 Inch for the Escort
and Cortina and 52inch for the Capri.
The problem is not the axle tubes but finding the matching halfshafts. 46.5 and 52 inch are now getting scarce.
Quaiff and others may be able to make custom length halfshafts to order - for a price
No issues over strength as welding in new tubes is no different to how Timken made them in the first place.
Don't think the service is cheap though
