i spent hours and hours searching the internet for info on spraying. couldn't find anything useful.

in the end i just bit the bullet and wen't for it. i used cellulose as it was easier to get. sprayed a mates bonnet about 4/5 months ago, still looks as good as the day i did it.

from actually doing it, i looked at what was wrong (slightly rough texture, and didn't spend enough time prepping it) and know what to do next time. more prep work and turn the air pressure down by about half

basically, read up on the safety things on 2k paint, make sure you're doing them, get a few old scrap panels and go for it

Ditto.

Also, if youre using plastic sheets to prevent overspray, make sure its antistatic vinyl. You can tell by its colour, as it has a slight pink colour to it.

I worked at DUPONT for 6m, and learnt a bit there as well.

after reading up abit ive just bought 5l of synthetic paint jet black. you just add 10% thinner then spray then cut back to a nice shine. i will post some picks up when i get it and tell if its easy or not lol.

remember to make sure your prep work is bang on. black shows up any imperfection.

i think the air pressure should be 6psi (?)

Are you painting onto Ali? Youll need an etch primer if so, or it will fall off!

A little tip I was given for synthetic paint, use a bit of 2 pack hardener, about 10-15% max, works wonders. Celly is okay but needs a lot of cutting back after words. Modern 2 pack paint is very safe these days as they have taken the cyanide out of it. With 2 pack often better to use a bit more hardener and a bit less thinners than you should, use 3-4 coats minimum, then 3-4 coats laquer, t-cut then polish. Some 2 pack paint needs laquer and some doesn't make sure you ask first before you buy. If you want pearl effect you can buy "chamellion" flakes, it's just a powder that you mix into your laquer and just paint over your colour, dead easy. If you can paint half decent then pearl is a breeze.

with practise you can get very good finish without have to cut back or polish the last coat, it all depends on what is being sprayed on.

I put down several coats, flat with successively finer wet'n'dry 600 -> 800 -> 100 -> 1200.

The final coat I thin down a bit more and then job done.

Lazy way is to slap on the paint in a couple of thick coats then cut down and polish.

"Modern 2 pack paint is very safe these days as they have taken the cyanide out of it."

NO IT ISNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is so dangerous that 'proper' bodyshops are not allowed to use it anymore

BASIC RULE

Use 2k without £500,000 of booth and equipment - you die - end of.

blakep82 - 18/8/09 at 08:04 PM

er, not quite ^

you die if you don't use a proper mask

That needs to be an air fed mask in a pressurised booth, with regularly changed filters, with a high bake facility.

A mask MAY help you, but still contaminate you neighbors, pets, wildlife

2K is my absolute pet hate, I have been in the trade for many years and have lost one good friend and seen another lapse into terrible bad health due to it.

Many people have died due to 2k, and many still will.
