Daft starter button question!
Jumpy Guy - 1/4/04 at 08:00 AM

If I fit a starter button set-up
whats to stop some idiot passenger pressing it when you're on the move, and ripping the started bendix to bits?

I know this may have a very short answer!!

JoelP - 1/4/04 at 08:16 AM

tell them not to press it!!!!

or, if you is concerned, wire up a relay to interupt the starter, so that it can only start when there is no oil pressure. or something like that...

Fit it to the right-hand side of your steering wheel!
I mean, how often have you had a passenger reach over and turn the keys in your current car?

Or a cut out as Joel said...

depends on how bad/mad a driver you are

Don't carry a passenger!

Saves weight and money on fuel and tyres.

AND you only have to buy one seat!

Jumpy,

I'm concerned about this too and came up with this circuit: http://locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=10762

Perhaps you could just use a missile-launch type switch with a flip-up cover?

I prefer idiot-proof though.

Get a message printed around the button that says passenger ejector seat

I've been giving this one some thought...

As we have a BEC surely it's a feature that the button will not activate when the engine is running... or am I wrong? Afterall, on a bike it's easier to press the button "by accident" and cause damage than on a car!

I thought BEC's were supposed to have a kick start

I hope not the amount of times I stall it.

My Honda starter will fire in accidentally with the engine running but it doesn't seem to have done it any harm, the few times it has happened, as it is a pre- engaged system.

Yeah, I think its a bit of a non-problem really, I've never had anyone try and fiddle with the controls in either the locost or a "normal" car. But a cutout circuit should be fairly straightforward as others showed. I worry more about people playing with the immobiliser keypad when on the move as that will cut the ignition
