Duratec education needed

I'm nearly at the end of my Pinto 2.1 rebuild, although I have another 2.1 to rebuild I think o am coming to the end of my Pinto adventures and crave a new challenge.
Duratec is my next engine of choice and I only have a basic awareness of its idiosyncrasies.
The engine can make 200bhp with just a change of cams which can be done insitue.
Over that rods and pistons need changing.
I understand that the Fiesta ST engine is a good start but don't know the engine codes.

Apart from the above I know nothing.

So educate me.

The St150 has a better cylinder head with larger valves and better gas flowing than standard.

It also has the EGR removed and doesn't have a DMF it has a standard flywheel.

150hp out the box and you can get close to 200bhp with throttle bodies on their own.

Block is good for 400hp I understand. But moving parts are not.

Engine is light being aluminium. I was able to lift my bare engine in my arms.

Duratec Engine is fitted, MS2 Extra V3 is assembled and tested, engine running, car now built. IVA passed 26/02/2016

Have a look at 'flak monkeys' post which has been stickied to the start of the engine section - I know it says something like 'sump construction underway', but is in fact a complete rebuild including supercharger install.

Hugh

Pinto's are great engines and very tuff.

I'm going down the Duratec route at the moment - some info here that needs to be updated - http://locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=192871

and all the latest photos are here (no need to be a FB member) https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10152527759580325.1073741828.601005324&type=1&l=40aae5e72f

The Duratec itself is a lovely engine - can't wait to finish mine. The ST150 and 2008+ Focus have a head that flows a bit better - about 10BHP - http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Duratec/Cylinder%20Head.htm

The rest of the engines are the same - general Mondeo engine code is CJBA/CJBB

The biggest part of the conversion is the ancillaries. Water rail stick out the back of the engine a long way so may need changing /new making. Thermostat needs swapping for a mechanical unit. New bellhousing, clutch etc and most likely a conversion to a hydraulic clutch at the same time. Belt tensioner is likely to need to be swapped when you dump the bits not required and also need to consider what to do with the alternator.

That's just a few quick thoughts, if you need any moe info give me a shout.

Cheers

Dave

One must move on

If I carried on with Pintos I would look at Cosworth

Fair point, it all depends on why you want to move on, Duratec is a very good engine - another tuner friend of mine managed 303BHP out of a NA 2.0L so you can get very good power.

If your going all modern then i assume you will be running full engine management on the Duratec?

just finished our engine mounts and gearbox mount on our Duratec 5 minutes ago :-) Were using an ST150 engine but its off to the engine builder on Monday now all the mounts are done. Our Spec:

Forged Pistons running between 9.5:1 and 10:1
Forged Rods with ARP's
ARP Head Studs
Standard Bottom End bolts but new, using the ARP's with the dry sump can be problematic.
Mild Porting job by Engine Builder
Standard Valves
Cams TBN but will be fairly wild NA Cams with Springs to suite.
Raceline internal pump dry sump
Raceline Duratec Water Rail
Raceline Breather Delete Cover
Chinese Knock Off Cosworth Plenum (actually surprisingly reasonable quality, a little rough around the internal trumpets but nothing that 30 minutes with the belt sander shouldn't sort.)
Jenvey 70mm Single Throttle Body
TTS C38-81 Rotrex supercharger Kit which includes a billet thermostat housing for clearance.

were running a standard Mazda MX5 gearbox with a flywheel / Clutch conversion kit from retro Ford. The gearbox will definitely be the weak link but at less than £100 for a lowish mileage example we will be keeping a spare under the bench :-)
