mk1 brake drums not going on after new shoes...

hi,
I've had to fit a new slave cylinder and shoes to my mk1 escort rear 8" drum live axle.
However, I'm having loads of trouble getting the old drum over the new shoes.
I've filed the lip of the drum, but is this is case of just walloping it, or is there a trick to it?

Any advice or links appreciated.

Thanks,

Did you wind the adjuster bar back in? That was usually my mistake when putting in new shoes.

make sure the adjusters are backed off fully, and hand brake completely off. you may still need to adjust the shoes up/down a bit.
one technique is to leaver the shoes away from the backplate and then offer up the drum, then a bit of judicious percussive maintenance to encourage it all into place

There shouldn't be a significant lip on the drum....
But nevertheless you need to make sure that the slave cylinder has retracted all he way in and the adjustment has all been taken out of course.
Beyond this, then as you are, they may need some "persuasion" and some wiggling about to get it over the shoes but not too much.
It is definitely the right slave cylinder isn't it and the right shoes?

I've precussived the drum on, but it's so tight the wheel won't turn. What I've not done is bleed the new slave, I can't see that pulling the piston in any further than the force I've exerted on it. The handbrake is unattached, but the adjusting rod on it won't move, hinting at the shoes being rammed up against the drum.

Thanks everyone

ok, I've got a theory. my old pads have a small "H" shaped place that goes between the handbrake lever and the shoe. My new shoes were missing it, so I moved the old one to the new shoes, that might have lost me a couple of mm of play? I'm going to try and get the drum off again to have a look. cheers

My theory was wrong about the H bit of metal, the handbrake lever needs it to exert force on the shoe. In the end, I ended up using my old shoe as the "top" one and it all then slipped together fine. I reckon the top shoe was fouling and I just hadn't spotted it.

Thanks everyone
