Locost engine
what engines, appart from the old x-flow can fit into the Book chassis without headaches like bonnet bulges and modified sumps like with the pinto,
something with reasonable power/tuning potential and is not too expensive and not rare
cheers

I would start by saying something form a bike.
If its a CEC your after then the VX Red top takes some beating £ for £ imho.

The pinto is easy, you can mod the sump etc yourself. X-flow is easiest requiring no mods and its a very light little engine too.
The bike engines need their sumps modding as they are mounted transverse in a bike and longitudinal in a seven, same with many newer 16v engines
including the zetec and red top. And almost all bike and 16v engines have ali sumps which you cant mod yourself unless you have an AC tig... Oh and
you will either need bike carbs or and after market injection/throttle body system for most injection car engines which can be big bucks

any suggestions on specific bike engines to look out for ?
i would love a hayabusa but i cant afford the £1500 price tag lol
car or bike engined im open minded at the miniute but ultimatley its going to be a £ vs Power decision

I'd agree BEC is the way to go for cheap poke per pound.... R1 seems to be flavour of the month at the moment. Cheap, good power output and not
very prone to going pop....
Most bike engines are already fairly highly tuned though so not much room for extra tuning potential (unless you start throwing money at
Holeshot)...
I'd agree with the VX red top for a CEC. Lots of cheap tuning parts thanks to the number of GM motors out there using them, shouldn't be
at all hard to find a bellhousing to mount to a type 9 gearbox etc....
Thought if I was going CEC I'd go for a Duratec because (as a new-ish engine) they already have a fair number of ponies and the outputs of tuned
Duratec engines is increasing all the time....
You could go Honda VTEC. After all, if they fitted on in the front of a Mini, a locost shouldn't be a problem.... And the Jap tuning scene
should provide lots of tuning goodies, and the VTEC provides flexibility.... Only trouble might be finding a bellhousing to attach to a type 9.... And
some Honda engines rotate the wrong way relative to most engines.....

because of your budget i'd get a xflow then think about a zetec upgrade later on using the same gear box

oh o,
This could end up in a discussion:
BEC
CEC
I'm using the DOHC
just make the sump shorter and use the MT75. But a lot modifing to the chassis.

one last question, other than the mk1/2 escorts, what can i get a xflow out of?
the escorts can now fetch £1k so for me there well out of the question...

Don't forget the Toyota 4AGE engine - 1600cc, about 130BHP out of the box (I believe) and the core of the engine is about the same size as the
crossflow. Unfortunately the add-ons bulk up the size and make a bit hard to fit in, but many people manage to do it with a bit of work.
A very whizzy engine that goes well in such a light car.

I wouldn't bother with a crossflow these days, zetec is cheaper eaiser to come by, tough and supplies more ponies, it is also lighter than the
pinto will bolt on to a type9 or MT75, what more could you want
Cheers

som
ething like this link
would be the thing to go for if you're going CEC....
It's already attached to a type 9 gearbox, its got the Webers already attached....
Looks pretty read to go...
Can't understand with the obsession with Webers. Yes, they look beautiful, yes, they sound great... But they're not the best for fuel
economy! I saw one BEC that had the 90s carbs ripped off to be replaced with 60s Weber technology.... Cost an arm and a leg and didn't make any
difference!!!

Search and you will pick up a blade for a 1/3rd of that, it wont need any sump mods and will put plenty of smiles on your face.

I'd like to see the tacho graph before I believe the "1600BHP R34 Nissan Skyline" claim. After all, what to most rolling roads go up
to???
I suppose it's possible if you're prepared to put up with obscene amounts of turbo lag.......
