Can't understand with the obsession with Webers. Yes, they look beautiful, yes, they sound great... But they're not the best for fuel economy! I saw one BEC that had the 90s carbs ripped off to be replaced with 60s Weber technology.... Cost an arm and a leg and didn't make any difference!!!

Sidedraught/dcoe webers can be fairly economical. All depends on how well they are set up and driven. Driving back from the 'ring in the summer we were managing 35miles/gallon in a 1700cc x-flow engined escort. Admittadly being driven fairly carefully!

On the engine front; if your on a budget and want an engine lighter, more powerful and these days probably cheaper than a x-flow go for a 1600CVH. Fits very easily into a book chassis too. Probably biased on that one though

If I were to upgrade from that I'd go for a 4age. A very revvy, compact engine. Available and cheap as they are always being pulled from rotten Mk1 mr2's, often with less than 100k on the clock.

As you can tell, a CEC man. Well definetly for the road anyway.

HTH,
Andy

For cheap I agree with Big_wasa.

1.8 CVH in totally standard trim gives about 90BHP which is plenty to start with in a locost.
My indy goes quite well with one, ann IMHO its a lot better than a rattly old crossflow unless you want to spend lots of money tuning.

The Kawasaki ZX11/ZZR1100 is worth a look in my opinion. It was produced for 12 years so there are plenty to be had for around £500 mark. They've got a nice big clutch as standard and they're 147hp. Value for money if you ask me. Watch out for "running" N0.3 big end though.
